Past Events
Michigan Delegation
A delegation from Michigan, including State Senators, met with members of the Chamber Executive Committee Aug. 25. Members of the delegation included State Senator Bill Hardiman from Kentwood, chairman of Michigan's Welfare Services Committee; State Senator Gilda Jacobs from Huntington Woods, a top-ranking member of the Democratic caucus in the State Senate, and leaders of the Jewish Community in Michigan.
The President of the Chamber, Ambassador Zalman Shoval, described the Chamber activities, including its efforts to enhance purchases of U.S. products in Israel. He noted the growth in local activities on behalf of individual American states, counties and cities, utilizing the vast knowledge available in Israel, for the purpose of cooperation between Israeli technologies and U.S. funds.
Vice President of the Chamber, Mr. Tzvi Neta, Chairman of Automotive Equipment & Cars (importer of Chrysler automobiles), said that the ideal way to bring Israeli companies to invest in Michigan in general, and in the automobile industry in particular, was for the State to call on the Federal Government to earmark the financial aid it provides Israel, to buy American products. Mr. Neta added that new tax incentives and lenient regulations were very effective in encouraging new businesses from abroad, Israel included, in states like Maryland and Virginia.
Mr. Avi Barber, Boeing representative and member of the Chamber Executive Committee, suggested concentrating on cooperation efforts between American medium-sized companies and Israeli small ones. Mr. Barber suggested the delegation examine such existing models as a joint enterprise or agreements with several companies or States.
Executive Director of the Chamber, Ms. Tamar Guy, noted the Chamber would be delighted to assist Michigan companies with developing commercial relations in Israel, through the members and other business entities.
Additional participants included Continental Airlines senior country director, Mr. Avi Friedman, and Advocate Yossi Ben Dror, who heads the Chamber's Technical Standards and Regulations Committee.
U.S. Foreign Ministry Guest
Mr. David A. Gross, of the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs in the U.S. Department of State, a leading telecommunications expert, visited the Chamber at the beginning of the month and spoke with Chamber representatives about telecommunication infrastructure issues.
Guests included: Mr. Amnon Dick, Bezeq CEO; Mr. Tzvi Neta, Chamber Vice President and Chairman of Automotive Equipment & Cars; Ms. Shai-Lee Spiegelman, Legal Adviser and Government Relations Manager at Microsoft; Mr. Rami Guzman, former vice president of Motorola, today the company's director and an entrepreneur.
Mr. Gross was accompanied by his personal assistant, Ms. Deepti Rohatgi, and Ms. Barbara Masilko of the Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy in Israel. Chamber Executive Director, Ms. Tamar Guy, chaired the meeting.
Mr. Gross has led U.S. delegations to many international telecommunications conferences, and arrived in Israel to study telecommunication issues in Israel and the Palestinian Authority, especially in light of the disengagement from the Gaza Strip.
Mr. Dick described the local telecommunications market in general, particularly Bezeq, which is nearing completion of its privatization process. He emphasized that 80 percent of Israel's telecommunications market is in private hands. Mr. Gross was especially interested in Bezeq's WI-Max experiment in the Bedouin town of Rahat, and suggested a similar experiment be implemented in the Palestinian Authority as well.
Hurricane Katrina
We would like to thank our members for their overwhelming response to our requests for donations. Dozens of our members, including Sano, Lehman Brothers, General Electric, Bezeq, Gazit Globe, Heskia-Hacmun Law Firm, Card Guard and especially Teva, which donated $1 million, pledged toys, blankets, candy, diapers and thousands of dollars for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We mobilized the Manufacturers Association and the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce, which forwarded our request to their members. We thank IVC, which circulated our message to 1,000 companies recorded in their database.
Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. Attached is an email we received from our counterparts in Chicago:
Tamar, many thanks for your kind sentiments and your supportive actions.
Unfortunately, even we Americans who live far from the area that was struck directly by this horrific storm are, like you, largely powerless to have any direct impact on the relief efforts and are largely left only to watch in horror and to hope and pray that as many as possible of the victims will be rescued and will somehow be resettled in a way that is not permanently devastating to their lives. It is very kind of you and your members, and the Government of Israel, to express your solidarity with and support for the hundreds of thousands left homeless and hopeless by this terrible act of Nature in the positive way that you did. All Americans who learn of your support will be very grateful for it, and we at the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce Chicago will do whatever we can to communicate to our Chicago community what you and your colleagues are doing to help.
Once again, our thanks for your kindness and support. We hope to see you and some of your colleagues on our next Illinois Business Mission to Israel, later this year.
Kol tuv, u?bivracha,
Bob Berger, President
America-Israel Chamber of Commerce Chicago
