The Chamber Annual Award Gala Dinner

 

Binyamin Ben Eliezer, Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor, was the keynote speaker at the Chamber Annual Award Gala Dinner held on June 15, 2010 at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, the Honorary Chairman of the Chamber, Hon. James B. Cunningham. Hundreds of Chamber Members, Israel's leading businessmen, and public figures, and business delegations from Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio and Texas, participated in the event.
In his speech, Minister Ben Eliezer emphasized the importance of the business relations between Israel and United States, which have benefitted

 

The Chamber Awards were presented to:

Mr. Benny Landa, for his excellence in

Hi-tech entrepreneurship; developing alternative energy sources; being a prolific inventor, with more than 600 patents worldwide and for investing in education.

 

Hon. Donald Plusquellic, Mayor of Akron, Ohio, for promoting trade relations between his city – and other U.S. cities – and Israel, and for being the first big-city mayor in the U.S. to invest public and private dollars directly into an Israeli incubator, Targetech.

 

FIRST - For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology - for encouraging Israeli students to aspire for an education and career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while promoting self-confidence, knowledge, life-schooling, reciprocal responsibilities, creative thinking and problem-solving.

 

Noble Energy, for its key role in ushering Israel in the natural-gas age since it began local operations in 1998, and for continuing its operations even when times were tough for the Israeli economy. For investing in Israel's natural gas industry and providing the Israeli market a domestic supply of clean, environmentally friendly fuel.

The Ambassador's Award was granted to FedEx Express, for 20 years of contribution to Israel's economy and society, for operating daily cargo flights to and from Israel, significantly contributing to the development and prosperity of Israel's trade relations.

Special Recognition Award for promoting Israeli hi-tech in the world and his community activities, including his role as the Chairman of the Israeli Association of Electronics and Software Industries, 2004-2008, and educational involvement, leading to an increase in the number of graduates in the technological fields.

Seminar: U.S. Anti-Bribery Laws

 

The Chamber, together with Advocate Steven H. Becker of Baker & McKenzie Law Firm, and Advocate Vibeke Dank, held a seminar on U.S. Anti-Bribery Laws, on June 17 2010, at the Chamber Conference Room.

Participants were introduced to the basic principles and legal requirements under U.S. and

Israeli law regarding anti-bribery compliance.

Steven H. Becker is a Principal of Baker & McKenzie LLP, with 67 offices in 39 countries. Vibeke Dank recently started an independent practice after resigning from her position as General Counsel at Verint.

 

 

Conference: Practical Taxation Issues and Minimization of the Tax Burden while Active in the U.S.

 

The Chamber, in cooperation with Ziv & Haft, CPAs, and Shibolet Law Firm, held a conference on Practical Taxation Issues and Minimization of the Tax Burden while Active in the U.S. on June 6, 2010 at the Chamber conference room. The speakers described general rules related to international taxation and holding mechanisms concerning activities globally in general, and in the U.S., in particular.

Washington and New York

 

The Chamber, in cooperation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will hold a conference marking 25 years of the FTA between the U.S. and Israel, on Oct. 19 in Washington, D.C. On Oct. 20, the Chamber will hold its annual conference in New York, in cooperation with the Israel-America Friendship League and the America-Israel Chamber of Commerce in New York. Complete details will be provided shortly.

The Chamber Board of Directors has established a number of committees as platforms for the Chamber activities:

Within the Cleantech Committee, the Chamber has initiated a new project concerning water technology, spearheaded by Booky Oren, Member of the Board and co-chair of the Cleantech Committee.

The project, "From Initiation to Actualization," concerns cooperation between Israeli and U.S. water companies, the goal being to introduce innovative technologies to the U.S. public.

Following a meeting with the mayor of Akron, Ohio, and his staff, a professional team will arrive in Israel later this month to examine opportunities for cooperation with local water entities, in an attempt to create a model to be duplicated elsewhere.

Seminar: New, Stringent Legislation as related to Air-Cargo Shipping 

 

Beginning Aug. 1, 2010, every shipment of cargo by passenger aircraft in the United States must be screened before loading, under the 9/11 Act.  All cargo shipments aboard passenger aircraft in the U.S. could face the potential risk of significant delays, damage and spoilage. 

The U.S. Department of Commerce and the Department of Homeland Security are co-hosting a webinar on Monday, July 19th at 8 p.m. Israel time. Participants will be informed of the details of this impending requirement, and of TSA’s voluntary Certified Cargo Screening Program, through which trusted shippers and forwarders can pre-screen their cargo and avoid delays. Speakers will include officials from the Certified Cargo Screening Program at the Transportation Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security.  Click here to register for the webinar.

 Chamber Provides Boardroom to Members

 

The Chamber is providing its Members, at a symbolic price, its boardroom on the 8th floor in the America House in Tel Aviv. Up to 18 people can be seated around the table, or up to 35 people in a theatre configuration. Services include a first-rate projector, a "barcode" for presentation purposes. Fast-Track Visa to the U.S.

 

The Chamber assists its Members with a fast-track service for interviews for visas to the U.S. The service is designated only for business trips. The service includes a fee.

Educational Foundation Seeks Nominees for Fellowship Program

 

The United States-Israel Educational Foundation is seeking candidates for the Hubert H. Humphrey North-South Fellowship Program. The program offers 10 months of study and work-related experience for mid-career professionals in leadership positions in the public and private sectors who possess potential for advancement in their professions. Candidates should have a minimum of five-year professional experience; have a bachelor's degree, demonstrated leadership qualities; record of public service and fluency in English.

Fellowships will be granted to professional candidates specifically in the following fields: 

       * Agricultural development/agricultural economics

       * Communications/journalism

       * Drug abuse education, prevention and treatment

       * Economic development

       * Educational planning

       * HIV/AIDS policy and prevention

       * Human resource management/personnel

       * Law, civil society, human rights, democratic development
